Spotify has now suffered at least two outages in as many weeks, and the second of these service interruptions occurred soon after the Stockholm-headquartered company laid off hundreds of employees.

More than a few social media diehards have penned firmly worded posts about the Spotify outages, which the streaming giant has acknowledged and responded to via its official “Spotify Status” Twitter account. Per the same page, the first of the disruptions arrived on January 13th, followed by another outage yesterday.

“Something’s not quite right, and we’re looking into it. Thanks for your reports!” Spotify Status wrote at 11:30 AM PST yesterday, informing customers about 60 minutes later that it had remedied the issue(s) at hand.

(In the replies section, all manner of users made clear their plans to switch to competing platforms such as Apple Music, and the official Deezer Twitter account took a stab at wooing some of these miffed music-lovers. Interestingly, different users yet communicated that they only utilize Spotify because it’s the exclusive home of The Joe Rogan Experience.)

As initially noted, the latter outage came just days after Spotify announced that it would lay off around six percent of its workforce, or approximately 590 team members. Of course, it’s unclear whether the developments are at all connected, but it bears highlighting that prior to posting an update about the initial 2023 outage, Spotify Status had last tweeted a disruption notice in March of 2022.

In any event, Spotify was operational at the time of this writing, and especially when it comes to uptime, it’ll be worth keeping in mind moving forward that the service has more users (and more content) than ever.

Besides the resulting strain on digital infrastructure, Spotify’s userbase is for obvious reasons producing a larger number of streams than at any other point in company history. And on this front, Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” last week broke the existing Spotify record for most streams in a week-long period.

This afternoon, Spotify confirmed that the 30-year-old had shattered her own record by racking up well over 100 million additional streams across the past seven days. Additionally, “Shakira Charts” indicated on Friday that the Colombian singer-songwriter had become the first Latin artist to surpass 72 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

Once again at the time of writing, Shakira specifically boasted 72.53 million monthly listeners – well above Bad Bunny (67.61 million monthly listeners) notwithstanding the Puerto Rican artist’s many Spotify records and considerable overall popularity.
